Protesters Get Detained at Manhattan Hotel

(MENAFN) Several dozen demonstrators were taken into custody in Manhattan, New York, on Tuesday night after organizing a sit-in inside the lobby of a TriBeCa hotel.

The protest targeted what participants claimed was the hotel’s role in lodging federal immigration officials connected to the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement drive, according to The New York Times.

Over 100 activists assembled inside the Hilton Garden Inn on Sixth Avenue near Canal Street, voicing opposition to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency. They shouted slogans condemning ICE and wore black T-shirts displaying anti-ICE messages.

In addition to criticizing immigration authorities, the protesters accused Hilton of allowing its facilities to be used to house ICE personnel. Demonstrators argued that the company was complicit by allegedly offering accommodations to federal agents.

Hotel employees and guests appeared bewildered by the sudden demonstration, and there was no immediate confirmation that ICE officials were actually staying at the location.

Law enforcement officers entered the hotel lobby and announced that anyone declining to leave would face arrest. This warning led many protesters to disperse, while journalists were also ordered to exit the building. Roughly 50 demonstrators remained inside after others departed.

Subsequently, officers from the Police Department’s Strategic Response Group advanced to detain the remaining protesters.

Authorities stated that there were “multiple” arrests, though no prompt details were provided regarding the exact number of people detained or the specific charges involved.
