LEWISTON, N.Y. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Port of Buffalo’s Lewiston Bridge border crossing seized a firearm from a passenger vehicle driven by a U.S. citizen.

On Oct. 30, CBP officers encountered Angel Lozano, 25, a U.S. citizen who arrived at the primary inspection area after making a wrong turn onto the border crossing. Lozano was referred for secondary inspection to verify his identity because he did not possess authorized travel documents.

Springfield Armory XD5 firearm and drug paraphernalia seized at the Lewiston, N.Y. border crossing.

During a vehicle inspection, CBP officers recovered a Springfield Armory XD5 firearm as well as a small amount of marijuana.

Additional checks revealed that Lozano had prior criminal history that prohibited him from possessing a firearm.

“Our frontline CBP officers continue to demonstrate exceptional vigilance and professionalism through their thorough inspections and quick actions,” said Joseph Draganak, port director for the Area Port of Buffalo. “Their actions prevented an unauthorized firearm from entering our communities and demonstrate our continued commitment to working closely with law enforcement partners to help keep the public safe.”

CBP officers took Lozano into custody and processed him. CBP then transferred Lozano and the firearm to the New York State Police. He was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, a felony.

CBP's border security mission is led at our nation’s Ports of Entry by CBP officers and agriculture specialists from the Office of Field Operations. CBP screens international travelers and cargo, both inbound and outbound, and searches for illicit narcotics, unreported currency, weapons, counterfeit consumer goods, prohibited agriculture, invasive weeds and pests, and other illicit products that could potentially harm the American public, U.S. businesses, and our nation’s safety and economic vitality.
